Poverty is widespread in India with the nation estimated to have a third of the world's poor. Knowing that spreading education is an effective means for eradicating poverty, Central, State governments and many non-governmental organizations provide scholarships to the underprivileged students to get higher education.

MENTORS is a registered public trust, with its activities centered on education, does mentoring coupled with promotion of value system among the beneficiaries, as Buddha said:

Vision

Improvement in the quality of life of identified underprivileged individuals, through promotion of education, particularly in rural areas.

We are committed to assist people irrespective of religion, caste, gender, etc in realizing their full potential, through promotion of education, in a manner that helps both the beneficiaries and society, by acting as mentors and catalysts.

Structure

To realize the above vision and mission, MENTORS works through structured groups in villages; the villages so far selected by MENTORS are : Kovalam, Parivakkam and Nehru Nagar ( Ennore ) - all near Chennai.

PROGRAMMES & INFRASTRUCTURE

MENTORS SCHOLARSHIP FOR EXCELLENCE [MSE]

  • Those students recommended by Coastal Rural and Development Trust(CRDT) in Kovalam, Parivakkam and Nehru Nagar, Ennore and who have passed 10th or 12th Board Examination with good academic record and secured admission in any Skill Development course, ITI, Diploma Courses, College Degree Courses in any recognised institution, with the annual family income less than Rs. 1.8lac may apply for MSE.
  • In the past 18 years we have given over more than 250 MSE scholarships for aspiring children in Kovalam, Parivakkam.
  • For MSE scholarships and for supporting education oriented activities of CRDT, PCT, and SRV MENTORS mobilises funds, mostly from Trustees, and the rest from well wishers & past beneficiaries.

FOUNDATION FOR EXCELLENCE [FFE]

  • MENTORS also provide services of MENTORS volunteers in Chennai, Coimbatore, Bengaluru and Hyderabad for identifying students who passed out in the precious years’ 12th Board exam and secured admissions in recognized engineering or medical colleges and meeting the Foundation for Excellence (FFE) scholarships criteria covering academic excellence and family income.
  • Over the past 20 years MENTORS Facilitators have been able to grant more than 200 scholarships to academically brilliant underprivileged students for engineering and medicine. In 2014 alone, our Facilitators may be processing about more than 100 new applications.
  • FFE provides liberal scholarship of Rs 40000 per year ( in 2014-15) for engineering, medicine, law and B.Pharm.
  • For FFE scholarships resources for scholarships are mobilised and disbursed to the students by FFE.

STRUCTURED GROUPS OF MENTORS

  • We have structured groups in Kovalam, Parivakkam and Nehru Nagar (Ennore). We have Costal Rural and Development Trust (CRDT) in Kovalam with Mr. R. Narayanan - a social worker as its managing trustee, Parivakkam Charitable Trust (PCT) in Parivakkam with Mr. M. Mani - a social worker as its Managing Trustee and and Sri Ramakrishna Vivekananda Trust ( SRV) in Ennore, Chennai with Mr.Anandhan as its managing trustee.
  • Both CRDT and PCT have their own buildings, part–time teachers, library, computers and other infrastructures, for conducting coaching classes for students to acquire academic excellence, coupled with the practice of Yoga, meditation and value system.
  • Both CRDT and PCT have vision to make their villages as model villages. While they look to MENTORS for its guidance and resources in the areas pertaining to education, they are planning to approach corporate houses for their guidance and resources in other areas for making their villages grow in other fields.
  • For activities of CRDT and PCT, MENTORS welcome corporate houses to take up self sustaining well managed projects in Kovalam and Parivakkam, for providing drinking water, constructing modern toilets in houses and school, planting of shady and fruit bearing trees, training for skills, crafts, gardening, solar lamps etc.. to enable villagers to make the villages as model villages.
